    A Feasibility Check for Geographical Cluster Based Routing under Inaccurate Node Localization in Wireless Sensor Networks

    Localized geographic single path routing along a wireless network graph requires exact location information about the network nodes to assure message delivery guarantees. Node localization in practice however is not exact. Errors ranging from several centimeters up to several meters are usual. How to perform localized routing in practice when such errors are prevalent? In this work we look at a promising routing variant which does not completely overcome this practical problem but which mitigates it. The concept does away with trying to find node positions as precise as possible but allows inaccuracies from the very beginning. It partitions the plane by a regular mesh of hexagons. The only information which is of interest is in which cell of that partitioning a node is located in. Using this node embedding, a virtual geographic overlay graph can then be constructed. To find the node positions we apply three variants of multidimensional scaling, two of them being a node localization approach which has been well studied in the context of sensor networks and one which we apply here for the first time in that context. Using the location information we get from these localization approaches we embed the nodes into the clusters their location falls into. We define two graph metrics to assess the quality of the overlay graph obtained by the embedding. Applying these two metrics in a simulation study, we show that cluster based routing is an eligible approach to support localized geographic routing when location errors are prevalent

    MFACE: A Multicast Backbone-Assisted Face Traversal Algorithm for Arbitrary Planar Ad Hoc and Sensor Network Topologies

    Face is a well-known localized routing protocol for ad hoc and sensor networks which guarantees delivery of the message as long as a path exists between the source and the destination. This is achieved by employing a left/right hand rule to route the message along the faces of a planar topology. Although face was developed for the unicast case, it has recently been used in combination with multicasting protocols, where there are multiple destinations. Some of the proposed solutions handle each destination separately and lead thus to increased energy consumption. Extensions of face recovery to the multicast case described so far are either limited to certain planar graphs or do not provide delivery guarantees. A recently described scheme employs multicast face recovery based on a so called multicast backbone. A multicast backbone is a Euclidean spanning tree which contains at least the source and the destination nodes. The idea of backbone assisted routing it to follow the edges of the backbone in order to deliver a multicast message to all spanned destination nodes. The existing backbone face routing scheme is however limited to a certain planar graph type and a certain backbone construction. One of the key aspects of the multicast face algorithm MFACE we propose in this work is that it may be applied on top of any planar topology. Moreover, our solution may be used as a generic framework since it is able to work with any arbitrary multicast backbone. In MFACE, any edge of the backbone originated at the source node will generate a new copy of the message which will be routed toward the set of destination nodes spanned by the corresponding edge. Whenever the message arrives at a face edge intersected by a backbone edge different from the initial edge, the message is split into two copies, both handling a disjoint subset of the multicast destinations which are defined by splitting the multicast backbone at that intersection point

    Localized Minimum Spanning Tree Based Multicast Routing with Energy-Efficient Guaranteed Delivery in Ad Hoc and Sensor Networks

    We present a minimum spanning tree based energy aware multicast protocol (MSTEAM), which is a localized geographic multicast routing scheme designed for ad hoc and sensor networks. It uses locally-built minimum spanning trees (MST) as an efficient approximation of the optimal multicasting backbone. Using a MST is highly relevant in the context of dynamic wireless networks since its computation has a low time complexity (O(n log n)). Moreover, our protocol is fully localized and requires nodes to gather information only on 1-hop neighbors, which is common assumption in existing work. In MSTEAM, a message split occurs when the MST over the current node and the set of destinations has multiple edges originated at the current node. Destinations spanned by each of these edges are grouped together, and for each of these subsets the best neighbor is selected as the next hop. This selection is based on a cost over progress metric, where the progress is approximated by subtracting the weight of the MST over a given neighbor and the subset of destinations to the weight of the MST over the current node and the subset of destinations. Since such greedy localized scheme may lead the message to a void area (i.e., there is no neighbor providing positive progress toward the destinations), we also propose a completely new multicast generalization of the well-know face recovery mechanism. We provide a theoretical analysis proving that MSTEAM is loop-free and always achieves delivery of the multicast message, as long as a path exists between the source node and the destinations. Our experimental results demonstrate that MSTEAM is highly energy-efficient, outperforms the best existing localized multicast scheme and is almost as efficient as a centralized scheme in high densities

    Intangible Assets - Valuation, Accounting, and Corporate Performance

    Immaterielle Vermögenswerte wie z. B. Marken und Patente wandeln sich laut Theorie und Praxis zunehmend zum entscheidenden Erfolgsfaktor und Werttreiber fĂŒr Unternehmen. Dabei ist festzuhalten, dass nur nutzenstiftende, einzigartige und schwer zu imitierende bzw. zu substituierende Vermögenswerte, wie es in der Regel immaterielle Vermögenswerte auch sind, nachhaltig unternehmensspezifische Wettbewerbsvorteile erbringen und sichern. Durch die Einbindung immaterieller Vermögenswerte in materielle Werte oder Arbeitsprozesse können diese Cash Flows und somit Wert fĂŒr das Unternehmen generieren. Diese sog. immateriellen Vermögenswerte werden definiert als identifizierbare, nicht monetĂ€re Vermögenswerte ohne physische Substanz. GĂ€ngige Beispiele fĂŒr Rechte und Werte, die unter diese Definition fallen, sind Computersoftware, Patente, Urheberrechte, Filmmaterial, Kundenlisten, Hypothekenbedienungsrechte, Fischereilizenzen, Im-portquoten, FranchisevertrĂ€ge, Kunden- oder Lieferantenbeziehungen, KundenloyalitĂ€t, Marktanteile und Absatzrechte. Allgemein können Immaterielle Werte gemĂ€ĂŸ ihrer Entstehung bzw. Herkunft in folgende sieben Kategorien eingeteilt werden: Innovation, Human, Customer, Supplier, Investor, Process und Location Capital. Zwei zentrale Entwicklungen – verstĂ€rkter Wettbewerb aufgrund der Globalisierung des Warenverkehrs bzw. der Deregulierung in SchlĂŒsselindustrien wie Telekommunikation auf der einen und das Aufkommen moderner Informationstechnologien auf der anderen Seite – haben Unternehmensstrukturen seit Mitte der 80er Jahre dramatisch gewandelt und werden fĂŒr den steigenden Einfluss von immateriellen Vermögenswerten auf den Erfolg von Unternehmen in Industrienationen verantwortlich gemacht. Aus diesen GrĂŒnden rĂŒckt auch die Notwendigkeit der Analyse der Bilanzierung und Bewertung dieser Vermögenswerte stĂ€rker in den Vordergrund. Ziele dieser (kumulativen) Dissertation sind nicht nur die Erbringung des Nachweises der BefĂ€higung zur selbstĂ€ndigen Bearbeitung wirtschaftswissenschaftlicher Problemstellungen, von umfassenden Fachkenntnissen und von wissenschaftlichem Urteilsvermögen, sondern auch in der Lieferung eines wissenschaftlichen Fortschritts zu folgenden miteinander thematisch eng verbundenen forschungsleitenden Hauptfragen: (1) Inwieweit spiegelt sich die oftmals in Theorie und Praxis festgestellte gestiegene Bedeutung immaterieller Vermögenswerte fĂŒr Unternehmen in den Bilanzen und der Darstellung im Anhang der KonzernabschlĂŒsse wider? Welche Risiken ergeben sich durch die Bilanzierung (-spraxis) immaterieller Vermögenswerte (insbesondere von GeschĂ€fts- und Firmenwerten)? (2) Welche Verfahren und Methoden kommen zur Bewertung von immateriellen Vermögenswerten (insb. von patentierten Technologien) im Rahmen der Bilanzierung nach internationalen Rechnungslegungsstandards zur Anwendung? (3) Welchen Einfluss ĂŒben bilanzierte immaterielle Vermögenswerte auf die Performance von Unternehmen aus?The importance and influence of intangible assets has significantly increased since the mid-1980s. This development has been driven by two fundamental developments – the intensified business competition due to the globalisation of trade and the deregulation in key economic sectors, such as financial services or telecommunication, and the advent of information technologies.     Spatially autocorrelated training and validation samples inflate performance assessment of convolutional neural networks

    Deep learning and particularly Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) in concert with remote sensing are becoming standard analytical tools in the geosciences. A series of studies has presented the seemingly outstanding performance of CNN for predictive modelling. However, the predictive performance of such models is commonly estimated using random cross-validation, which does not account for spatial autocorrelation between training and validation data. Independent of the analytical method, such spatial dependence will inevitably inflate the estimated model performance. This problem is ignored in most CNN-related studies and suggests a flaw in their validation procedure. Here, we demonstrate how neglecting spatial autocorrelation during cross-validation leads to an optimistic model performance assessment, using the example of a tree species segmentation problem in multiple, spatially distributed drone image acquisitions. We evaluated CNN-based predictions with test data sampled from 1) randomly sampled hold-outs and 2) spatially blocked hold-outs. Assuming that a block cross-validation provides a realistic model performance, a validation with randomly sampled holdouts overestimated the model performance by up to 28%. Smaller training sample size increased this optimism. Spatial autocorrelation among observations was significantly higher within than between different remote sensing acquisitions. Thus, model performance should be tested with spatial cross-validation strategies and multiple independent remote sensing acquisitions. Otherwise, the estimated performance of any geospatial deep learning method is likely to be overestimated

    Overview of the MOSAiC expedition - Atmosphere

    With the Arctic rapidly changing, the needs to observe, understand, and model the changes are essential. To support these needs, an annual cycle of observations of atmospheric properties, processes, and interactions were made while drifting with the sea ice across the central Arctic during the Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) expedition from October 2019 to September 2020. An international team designed and implemented the comprehensive program to document and characterize all aspects of the Arctic atmospheric system in unprecedented detail, using a variety of approaches, and across multiple scales. These measurements were coordinated with other observational teams to explore cross-cutting and coupled interactions with the Arctic Ocean, sea ice, and ecosystem through a variety of physical and biogeochemical processes. This overview outlines the breadth and complexity of the atmospheric research program, which was organized into 4 subgroups: atmospheric state, clouds and precipitation, gases and aerosols, and energy budgets. Atmospheric variability over the annual cycle revealed important influences from a persistent large-scale winter circulation pattern, leading to some storms with pressure and winds that were outside the interquartile range of past conditions suggested by long-term reanalysis. Similarly, the MOSAiC location was warmer and wetter in summer than the reanalysis climatology, in part due to its close proximity to the sea ice edge. The comprehensiveness of the observational program for characterizing and analyzing atmospheric phenomena is demonstrated via a winter case study examining air mass transitions and a summer case study examining vertical atmospheric evolution. Overall, the MOSAiC atmospheric program successfully met its objectives and was the most comprehensive atmospheric measurement program to date conducted over the Arctic sea ice. The obtained data will support a broad range of coupled-system scientific research and provide an important foundation for advancing multiscale modeling capabilities in the Arctic
